Passer Angelfish (Holacanthus passer)

The Passer Angelfish, otherwise known as the King Angelfish, change coloring with maturation.

 

As juveniles, their top half is a solid orange with a couple of blue margins marking the face. They have one white stripe and their rear halves have multiple blue stripes.

 

Once the Passer Angelfish ages, their blue stripes morph into an array of blue and orange scales. They keep their white stripes, and their elongated dorsal and pelvic fins are highlighted with the same blue as their juvenile stripes. Their tail fin is a striking solid yellow, and their caudal and pectoral fins are yellow as well.

 

It is best to house the Passer Angelfish in a 250 gallon tank or larger due to the fact that this type of angelfish can grow to be a foot long. The tank should have plenty of live rock for hiding and grazing. The passer Angelfish can be aggressive towards other angelfish, but they are generally peaceful towards other fish. They are not good reef dwellers. They tend to nip at stony and soft corals (sessile invertebrates) and clam mantles.

 

The diet of the Passer Angelfish should include: meaty items such as mysis and frozen shrimp, high-quality angelfish preparations, spirulina, and marine algae. The Passer Angelfish should be fed at least three times a day.
